On August 29, 2025, NPS staffers installed a new wayside on the boardwalk explaining the stone breakwater and sills in the south marsh visible from the boardwalk.  

FODM is very grateful to the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association for a grant that partially funded this project and to our NPS partners for helping make it happen. Our intent is to help visitors understand why NPS built the breakwater and sills, part of the Dyke Marsh restoration and stabilization project to stabilize the eroding marsh and encourage sediment accretion.
